Green hydrogen, a great opportunity

Hydrogen offers significant potential for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and represents a major economic opportunity. It is mainly produced by electrolysis of water using renewable electricity and represents one of the levers for the future to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality: development of green mobility, decarbonization of massive industrial uses of hydrogen (fertilizers, refineries, chemicals, etc.), better integration of intermittent renewable energies into the energy system, and large-scale storage of surplus electricity.

Hydrogen has two main uses: on the one hand, it serves as a raw material for the production of ammonia (fertilizer) and methanol; on the other hand, it is used as a reagent in the refining of crude oil into petroleum products, fuels, and biofuels.

Nevertheless, there are many possible uses for hydrogen, and it shows promise for decarbonizing a number of sectors and supporting the energy transition.
